LASER SURGERY
How does Laser Surgery work?

A laser is a device which generates an intense infrared beam of light. This carbon dioxide laser beam absorbs into water found in skin and other tissues, vapourizing cells.
In other words, a laser emits extreme heat that enables for precise cutting and coagulation during surgery.
What are the benefits of Laser Surgery?
There are countless benefits to laser surgery. For one, laser energy actually seals blood vessels and nerve endings while it cuts, which creates a less painful incision and a faster and less painful healing period. Sealing of blood vessels creates less bleeding, and in some types of surgeries, creates no bleeding at all! The heat also creates less chance of infection because it kills bacteria at the site!
Another benefit of the laser is it's precision. In surgeries where a mass or tumor need to be removed, laser surgery enables a more precise excision of the cancer, which can actually prevent it from coming back! Also, the precision and clean cut of a laser creates reduced post-surgical swelling at the site.
Laser Surgery is offered with the following procedures:
* Elective Procedures such as spay and neuter surgery for your cat or dog. We have found that performing these procedures with laser, as oposed to a scalpel blade, has helped our patients recover a lot faster (2 to 3 days faster on average!).
* We have had great success with Cat Declaws. We feel that the laser technique is much more humane than both the traditional guillotine-type clipper or blade surgery. During the declaw surgery, there is practically no bleeding. The surgical area is cleaner, and a tourniquet is no longer needed to help control bleeding. In some cases, bandaging is not necessary, making recovery a lot less stressful for your cat. Cats recover much faster, and are able to walk and resume other regular activities sooner. Post surgical complications are also decreased because there is less swelling of the paws and less chance of infection! Cats generally look more comfortable, eat great and are less restless when their pain is managed. Also, with laser, your pet may be able to go home after one night of hospitalization, compared to a minimum of 2 nights with any other technique. Laser creates the opportunity for your cat to be generally more comfortable after declaw surgery! Please note that declawing is still considered an invasive surgery and proper pain medication and control is used with ALL of our patients to help make the experience as pain-free as possible.
* Non-Elective Procedures such as wart, mass, cyst and tumor removal. In general, the surgery is much shorter, with some growths needing only a local sedation to be removed.
Other procedures include some dental, eye, ear, and nose surgeries!
YOUR PETS DESERVE TO FEEL COMFORTABLE!
Although post-surgical pain with a laser procedure is greatly decreased, there is no doubt that any surgery still carries with it a level of discomfort! We prescribe Pain Management with ALL of our surgical procedures to help maximize your pet's level of comfort before, during and after surgery. Also, please note that pain medication is NOT optional to our clientelle, and must be taken home when prescribed by the vet.
